Update on the Annie Mae Aquash book

Very sad to hear that Dennis Banks walked on. I am grateful to him for the time he spent with me last year, and that conversation will inform my book in meaningful ways. My thoughts are with him and his family.

I’m reading “Where White Men Fear to Tread,” the autobiography of Russell Means. This is giving me a great deal of insight into both Mr. Means and the challenges that AIM faced–the injustices they were trying to overcome.

I’m working on a section about the takeover of an Alexian Brothers Novitiate in Gresham, Wisconsin, by a group of Menominee Nation Warriors. The takeover, which took place in 1975 and lasted more than a month, was an effort by the Menominee Warriors Society to claim surplus land under the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. I’m reading The Abbey and Me by J. Patrick Rick, which contains a blow-by-blow description of the takeover. I don’t agree with many of Rick’s characterizations, but the information is invaluable.
